Formulating to meet customer needs

More and more countries are limiting the use of antibiotics growth promoters (AGPs), or seeking to eliminate the use, completely. We also see an increasing focus on banning the use of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) in animal diets. Hamlet Protein believes that abandoning sub-therapeutic doses of AGPs makes no sense if replaced by therapeutic doses in medicated feed.

There is not one single product that can replace antibiotics. The same applies to ZnO. A combination of specialty ingredients and additives, coupled with bio-security and good farm management, will be needed to maintain productivity without the use of antibiotics and ZnO.

Other challenges on formulation come from restricted use or restricted availability of animal protein sources like blood plasma, meat and bone meal or fishmeal. Whether it is driven by regulations or changing consumer preference, producers around the world are in need for vegetable alternatives to animal protein diet sources.

Research has shown that Hamlet Protein can be part of the solution. Our range of soy protein specialty ingredients and fiber products have shown efficacy in AGP and ZnO free diets and when compared with diets formulated with animal protein. When applied in young animal nutrition, it will lead to a more sustainable and more productive life cycle.

Protein Kinetics

In feed formulation, digestibility and energy content are used as fixed values of feed ingredients to optimize diets. This is quite practical but does not count in effects like differences in absorption speed and/or interactions between different ingredients before and after absorption.

A faster protein source becomes faster available for the animal, but a synchronization with AA absorption coming from other protein sources is needed to ensure optimal protein deposition. So, protein kinetics are especially important in diets that include low CP content combined with synthetic amino acids.

Hamlet Protein has tested the kinetics of a variety of protein sources. Want to find out which protein sources are considered to be fast proteins?
